County Legislator Had Previous Trouble with Law

The county legislator and attorney charged two weeks ago with cocaine possession had previous brushes with the wrong side of the law.

Westchester county legislator Gordon A. Burrows, of Yonkers, had run-ins with the law prior to his Feb. 5 arrest in Queensbury N.Y. for possesion of a small amount of cocaine.

In October, 2002, he was charged with violating an order of protection on his ex-wife Tina Burrows, during their court proceedings. The two have five children together and were in the middle of a divorce when he was accused of screaming at her, charging her vehicle, and throwing clothing in her face when she stopped by his Colonial Heights home to pick up their children. It was the third time in two months he was arrested for violating her order of protection.

From the Journal News on Oct. 2, 2002:

According to court and police records, Tina Burrows, 35, went to his home to pick up their children. When she arrived, she placed a bag of clothing on the curb. He yelled at her, charged her car on the driver's side where she was sitting and threw clothes in her face.

The paper reported that Burrows, who also practices law in White Plains, was chastised by Yonkers city Judge Thomas Daly who then warned:

"Mr. Burrows, I don't want to see you in court with this type of allegations," Daly said. "Please don't come before me in this condition again."

But the case was later transferred to Greenburgh due to the conflict of interest with a proceeding in Yonkers court against the then-seated Yonkers city councilman.

Robert Mancuso, Burrows's attorney, insisted his client was innocent, and that his ex-wife had filed the charges to curry favor towards her in their Rockland County divorce suit.

In Greenburgh, the case was dismissed, and sealed.

In June, 2005, Burrows was married, this time to Christine Tavolilla of Tuckahoe.

Mancuso could not be reached for comment this weekend on the cocaine event, despite messages left on his cellular phone.

Outside of Burrows's home address this morning, a young boy started up the engine of a large tan SUV in the driveway.

I grabbed my notepad but before I could even exit my own car, Burrows darted out of the house at 9:08 a.m.,  jumped into the driver's seat and took off.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story misspelled the name of Burrows' current spouse. Her maiden name was Christine Tavolilla.
