Update: Flooded Passages, Downed Lines Affect Residents

With road closures on Post Rd. and the Bronx River Parkway and power outages around the town, residents buckled in for a long, windy day.

It may not have quite the catchy name of a hurricane or the status of a natural disaster, but the storms that struck Scarsdale yesterday left at least as much in their wake as the remnants of a tropical storm.

With downed trees, power outages, and at least 50 homes plunging into darkness that may have pervaded even this morning, Scarsdale was not one of the worst-hit towns in Westchester, but it certainly wasn't spared.

This morning, Eric P. Gerringer, the deputy superintendent of Public Works, reported overall success in a swift and efficient cleanup yesterday - barring one main street closure that took roughly five hours to restore to service.

"[Con Ed] didn't show any outstanding outages in the area," said Gerringer today at 11 a.m.  As far as the village knew, he said, "all outages are restored. We are in the process - with the Highway department - of still removing large branches from roadways right away, as well as from catch-basins and open streams," he added.

"Right now, all roadways are passable."

One of the largest-scale, and most visible, efforts yesterday in Scarsdale was recovering Post Rd. to working order. At 11:30 a.m., during the worst of the rain and winds, two trees took down power lines and left areas of Greenacres without service.

More notably for other residents, the artery that connects Scarsdale and eastern White Plains was shut down from 11:30 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. when road crews finished cleaning up the mess of wires and tree parts that blocked the roadway.

Power outages were suffered last night in the Colonial Acres Cemetery region off Mamaroneck Rd. (near the Hutchinson River Parkway) and temporarily on Brite Ave. at Fenimore Rd.

The Bronx River Parkway was shut down in both directions due to flooding - and the 1/3 mile stretch between between Kingston Rd. and Farley Rd. along Post inconvenienced many commuters.

Other areas affected:

  • 136 Brewster Rd. - road closed, wires taken down by tree
  • 3 Continental Rd. - wires in the road
  • 1248 Post Rd.- tree felled wires at Fairview Dr. and pine tree fell, further down taking down local wires.
  • 9 Olmstead Rd. - tree fell on a transformer
  • 6 Cayuga Rd. - tree fell on secondary lines
  • Underhill Rd. is closed between Evandale Rd. and Sundale Pl. - tree down and live wires on the ground

Approximately 9,000 Con Edison customers were out of electrical service in the county, and as of today 500 homes were still reported to be out of service, according to reports from Con Edison.

"There were a number of municipalities that were hardest hit, and Scarsdale was not one of them," Gerringer said.
