The School of Graduate and Professional Studies at Manhattanville College Hosts an Evening with The New York Times "Corner Office" Columnist Adam Bryant

Manhattanville GPS Launches 20th Anniversary Speaker Series

Purchase, N.Y. – New York Times“Corner Office” columnist and best-selling author Adam Bryant kicked off Manhattanville College’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies’ (GPS) 20th Anniversary “Insights into Leadership” speaker series on Monday night.  Sharing his “Lessons from the Corner Office,” gleaned from hundreds of CEO interviews, Bryant spoke to a captivated crowd of over 150 Manhattanville alumni, graduate students, and faculty, as well as members of the Westchester and Fairfield business communities, and County officials.

Manhattanville’s historic Reid Castle was filled with an enthusiastic crowd for the evening’s program, opening with a networking reception, followed by a welcome from Manhattanville College President Dr. Jon Strauss, opening remarks and introduction of Bryant from Dr. Anthony Davidson, Dean of The School of Graduate and Professional Studies.

“Why do some people get promoted over others, all the way to the corner office?” Bryant asked. Sharing memorable stories and eye-opening insights from chief executives such as Jeff Weiner of LinkedIn, Mark Templeton of Citrix, Susan Lyne of AOL Brand Group, and Ursula Burns of Xerox, Bryant identified five qualities of effective leadership: “passionate curiosity,” “battle-hardened confidence,” “team smarts,” “a simple mindset,” and “fearlessness.”  The audience learned that leadership is not a one-size-fits-all skill, and Bryant spent the evening sharing perspectives from CEOs that can help anyone who seeks to be a more effective leader and employee in business, education, or nonprofit management. Bryant’s presentation was followed by a lively question and answer session with the audience.

In celebration of The School of Graduate and Professional Studies’ 2013/14 20th anniversary year, the “Insights into Leadership” series will offer speakers with a broad range of business expertise, presenting their views on local, national and global trends. Future presentations on finance, sport business, international management, marketing communications, and human resource management are also planned, highlighting the school’s graduate programs in each of these areas.

The first 50 event registrants received a complimentary copy of Bryant’s best-selling book, The Corner Office: Indispensable and Unexpected Lessons from CEOs on How to Lead and Succeed. His next book, titled Quick and Nimble: Lessons from Leading CEOs on How to Create a Culture of Innovation, will be published in January 2014. The event was sponsored by Westfair Communications, Heineken USA and LSW Chauffeured Transportation.
