Five Things You Need to Know Today: School Board to Hold Business Meeting, Westchester Welcomes Michael Moore and a 'Really Terrible' Orchestra

A list of activities and meetings in the Westchester region for Monday, Oct. 24.

1. If you love to play your violin but secretly know that your instrument's screechy wailings would never be accepted within the confines of the Hoff-Barthelson Music School, you have two choices: either practice secretly and shamefully behind closed doors or cultivate a sense of humor towards your lack of musical prowess... and join the ! Tonight, the Orchestra will be holding an at in White Plains. Conductor Benjamin Niemczyk will lead musicians of all levels through an eleclectic music selection requiring nothing more from attendees than their instrument and a music stand. 2. The Board of Education of the Scarsdale Union Free School District will hold a regular business meeting tonight at 8 p.m. in Fox Meadow Elementary School's new Multipurpose Room following a 6:30 p.m. school visit to Fox Meadow by the Board and a 7:15 p.m. open meeting of Board members with parents and the Fox Meadow community. Members of the public are invited to attend and speak at designated times.

3. After Japan's triple nuclear power reactor meltdown last spring, locals have shifted their attention towards Indian Point. Tonight, Valerie Kuletz, author of prize- winning environmental ethnography "Tainted Desert: Environmental and Social Ruina," will give a considering aging containment materials, decaying infrastructure and the relicensing of old yet structurally compromised nuclear plants. 4. Whether you love him or hate him, Michael Moore will definitely be on everyone's radar -- and turf --  when he . Moore , who will be signing copies of his newest book “Here Comes Trouble: Stories From My Life,” requests that attendees line up at 6 p.m.and purchase the book at Barnes & Noble (original receipt must be presented, one purchase per family or group, two person max). 

5. With a few clicks of a keyboard, you can have all the knowledge in the world right at your fingertips. But what if all you know how to do is turn the darn thing on? The Scarsdale Adult School will help you get clued into computers with enhanced class offerings this fall, which include "Computers Made Friendly," "Internet and E-Mail: The Basics," "Workplace Computer Skills" and "Website Design." Those who have already gained mastery of the mouse might also be interested in signing up with courses on InDesign and Photoshop led by Kate Schlientz, art director of "Project You Magazine" and senior designer at "Woman's World," along with "Learn to Blog," which will be taught in two sections by both Schlientz and Jeanne Muchnick of Westchester Magazine.
