Celebrate Hanukkah Around Scarsdale

Here are a few, festive events taking place this week during the Festival of Lights 2012.

As families gather around Scarsdale, cooking the traditional recipes, lighting the menorah and sharing gifts, there are many folks coming together in Scarsdale and nearby towns for Hanukkah services and celebrations. This year, Hanukkah begins today, Saturday, December 8 at sundown and ends on Sunday, December 16.

Here are a few events taking place in and around Scarsdale during the Festival of Lights this week.

Sunday, December 9, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., Hanukkah Happening at Beth El Synagogue, 1324 North Ave., New Rochelle: Enjoy some Israeli dancing, a bagel brunch, latkes, spin the dreidel and more. The event is $10 for adults; $5 for children. Click here to register.

Tuesday, December 11, 5:15 p.m. – Community Chanukah Candle Lighting at the JCC of Mid-Westchester in Scarsdale: The JCC is inviting the community to "celebrate the fourth night of the festival of lights...when we will join together as a community to light the GIANT menorah in front of the JCC of Mid-Westchester," JCC Mid Westchester's Director of Marketing Lisa Itzkowitz said. The menorah will be lit each night but Tuesday is the special, community event, she noted.

Tuesday, December 11, 5:30 p.m., Scarsdale Synagogue Temples Tremont and Emanu-El's Chanukah Celebration: Cantor Becker and Rabbi Brown will be leading the "traditional Chanukah song-singing, followed by the lighting of a 21-foot menorah. After the lighting ceremony, all are invited for potato latkes and apple sauce, jelly donuts, hot cocoa and juice."

Thursday, December 13, 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. – BBYO/JCC Hanukah Party at Chai House: Teens can enjoy a Hanukah Party at the Chai House in Scarsdale. Youngsters in grades 6-12 can "make latkes, play dreidel, sing songs and provide Hanukah cheer for the residents of Chai House–a WJCS-sponsored Jewish group home for young adults who are developmentally disabled," according to the JCC. 

Saturday, December 15, 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., Family Hanukkah Party at Anshe Shalom, 50 North Ave., New Rochelle: Celebrate the last night of candle lighting with music, refreshments, face painting, games and prizes.
