Putnam, Westchester: 70,000 Without Power

The utility companies are assessing so they can start restoring.

Forty-four thousand businesses and residences throughout Westchester are still without power after Irene's powerful winds swept through the county, Consolidated Edison reports on its site-specific hotline. Approximately 2,900 of those are from Bronxville and the surrounding areas.

Another 25,000—most of NYSEG's Westchester customers—are also out, according to its website.

Hardest-hit places include: Bedford, Lewisboro, Katonah, Cortlandt, White Plains, Yorktown, Mamaroneck, Greenburgh, Sleepy Hollow and New Castle.

The utility companies are assessing all the damage before estimating when power to these customers will be restored.

NYSEG customers can call 1-800-572-1131.

Con Ed customers can report problems and view outage maps at www.conEd.com or call 1-800-752-6633.

Con Ed recommends that those without power should turn off lights and unplug appliances to prevent overloaded circuits when power is restored and avoid opening your freezer to see if food is still frozen.

"Every time you open the door, room-temperature air enters and speeds the thawing process. Most fully loaded freezers will keep food frozen for approximately 36 to 48 hours; half-full freezers will keep food frozen for approximately 24 hours," company representatives said in a statement Sunday.

Con Ed is usually very good in their response... if you're a NYSEG customer you're probably screwed.

Well, in my case I had lost faith because they had changed the status from 3pm to unknown. So my family was shocked when the power came back just before 8. Didn't even lose any food (or at least I don't think we did, our freezers were fully stocked).
