Five Things You Need to Know This Weekend: Bridge Construction, Cancer Benefits and Mommy & Me Yoga

Today, construction will cause traffic detours on the Popham Road Bridge,

1. Today’s weather is going to be gloriously sunny – perhaps nature’s way of overcompensating for the rain that’s expected to fall from Saturday morning to Sunday evening? Today’s clear skies will reach highs near 69, with a west wind between 6 and 13 miles per hour. Thunderstorms will begin right before midnight, and sporadic showers and thunderstorms will continue until Sunday evening.

2. Today, the Popham Road Bridge will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. due to construction activity. Westbound Popham Road traffic will be detoured south on Garth Road east to Harney Road and north on Scarsdale Avenue back to Popham Road. Pedestrians are instructed to cross the Metro-North Railroad tracks using the Freightway Parking Garage pedestrian bridge. And as for the project itself, construction slated to be completed this summer – but to make a horrible pun, we’ll “cross that bridge when we come to it.”

3. Ask most moms whether they feel most “centered” while juggling a tiny tot in their arms, and they’ll probably say no. Gymboree Play and Music, however, is offering a Mommy and Me yoga class sure to stretch your hamstrings – not your patience – this afternoon from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. You’ll get to do the downward dog and cobra stretch as your babies laugh, fuss and cry on an adjoining yoga mat – and everything will be OK. And who knows? Maybe your little one’s first word will be “Ohm.” Tickets are $15 for Gymboree and Full Circle Full Circle Family Care members and $20 for non-members. E-mail scarsdaleny@gymboreeclasses.com to reserve a space, and make sure to bring your own yoga mat.

4. Drinks, dresses and desserts, oh my! Tonight’s “Fashion Now Trends & Friends Night” at The Westchester will benefit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and provide samples and product demonstrations from mall retailers, snacks and sips from Lonford’s Homemade Ice Cream and the Star Vodka Bar and a performance by the Million Dollar Quartet. Swing by at 6 p.m. to unwind from a long work week and use your purchasing power to raise money for medical research.

5. Dig into the dirt – and a good cause – this Saturday by volunteering to help garden and paint at the Andrus Children’s Center in Yonkers. The Center will be holding its fifth annual “A Clean Scene Volunteer Day” from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., giving you plenty of time to get your hands dirty and wash them clean before eating complementary barbecue while listening to live music from local performers.
