Five Things You Need to Know Today: Households Without Power in Scarsdale, Disposing of Storm Debris

Saturday's surprise snowstorm may have ended, but the clean-up is just beginning. Here's five things you need to know this chilly Halloween.

1. School districts across Westchester County are closed today as a result from Saturday's storm in municipalities such as Chappaqua, Bedford and Greenburgh. Scarsdale Public Schools, however, remained open. Do you think school should have been in session today? Sound off in the comments below.

2. As of 5:45 a.m. this morning, 2,472 households were still without power in Scarsdale, as well as 59,672 households total in Westchester County. According to Dan Lyons, public affairs manager at Con Edison, estimated power restoration time for the majority of county residences is Wednesday, Nov. 2.

3. If you've cleared your lawn, driveway and sidewalk of fallen trees and logs but don't feel like stockpiling enough kindling to fill Paul Bunyan's lumberjack yard, Village officials have instructed private residences to tie and bundle all debris and place it on the curb to be collected by the Village Sanitation Department on regularly-scheduled yard waste collection days. The Village will collect curbside branch bundles not exceeding 3 inches in diameter, 5 feet in length and weighing more than 40 pounds. Large untied bundles of branches, large uncut tree limbs or large bushes or logs will not be accepted, and non-compliance may yield a court appearance ticket. All other debris can be brought directly to the Village Recycling Yard on 110 Secor Road from Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Contact the Department of Public Works at (914) 722-1150 for more information.

4. Scarsdale residents have reported downed wires that are either dangling onto roads, sidewalks and driveways or tangled in branches and trees  The Village warns people to stay far away and to call Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED or dial 911 if any wires are causing an electrical hazard. And as for downed communication lines, contact either Cablevision at (914) 777-9000 or Verizon at 1-1800-VERIZON.

5. The Scarsdale Teen Center isn't going to let last weekend's snowstorm be the biggest surprise Village residents face this Halloween season — they're keeping their Haunted Dungeon open tonight in spite of downed trees and slick roads in order to ensure that nobody misses out on the chills, thrills and gore of Scarsdale's very first haunted house. Swing by the STC between 7-10 p.m. this evening. Admission is only $5 for all ages, and children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. The Scarsdale Teen Center is located at 862 Scarsdale Avenue. Contact the Scarsdale Teen Center at (914) 722-8358 or visit their website for more information.
