Five Things You Need to Know Today: April Showers, Drunk Driving Simulators and Job-Seeking Workshops

Today, teach your teenager about the dangers of drunk driving, learn how to adapt your skill set to the current job market and don't forget to grab your umbrella on your way out the door!

  1. It’s ironic that the May flowers came first this week before today’s April showers. Hopefully, you spent enough time in the sun to absorb enough mood-boosting Vitamin D – today’s forecast calls for rainfalls between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, with highs near 55 and a north wind around 11 miles per hour. Make sure to wear your galoshes to work … and store yesterday’s summer loafers and peep-toed heels in the back of your closet until conditions clear up later this week.
  2. Many teenagers don’t know the true ramifications of drinking and driving until it’s too late. The Scarsdale Task Force on Drugs and Alcohol, however, is sponsoring a Drunk Driving Simulator today at Scarsdale High School to show newly licensed drivers how a few drinks affect their actions and decision-making abilities behind the wheel. Students with a license or learner’s permit can sign up to experience the Simulator during a free period. Visit the school's website and look under the "Announcements" segment on the left-hand side to register.
  3.  If you’re a female job seeker, look no further than Westchester Jewish Community Services for free, non-sectarian workshops on how to mine productivity and purpose out of your everyday life. Today’s session, entitled “Navigating Your Career: Adapting Your Skills To The Current Market Trends,” runs from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Rosenthal Jewish Community Center of Northern Westchester. Register for today’s seminar or future workshop opportunities by contacting WHW Project Director Lenore Rosenbaum at (914) 761-0600, X308.
  4.  Do you have a child who was recently diagnosed with autism? If so, how do you explain his or her diagnosis? The WJCS Autism Family Center is offering a Positive Parenting Workshop series offering a series of lectures examining behavioral strategies, stress-reduction and bullying. Today’s workshop, “Talking With Your Child About Their Diagnosis,” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Registration is required. For more information, contact Elena Bel, Program Assistant, at (914) 761-0600.
  5.  Last night, Scarsdale’s Union Free School District Board met to formally adopt the 2011-2012 school budget, honor retiring faculty members and discuss the possibility of an Education Foundation. Find out more details by reading our meeting review later today!
