Five Things You Need to Know Today: Bowling Tournaments, Water Main Flushings and Food on a Stick

Today, compete in a Senior Citizens bowling tournament, enjoy tasty treats on a stick and make sure to stay calm if your water runs brown — it's only temporary.

1. Even if they aren’t celebrated with fanfare or recognized by the U.S. government, bizarre holidays devoted towards appreciating random philosophies or objects are nevertheless a fun way to brighten your early spring doldrums. For instance, did you know that today is “National Something-on-a-Stick Day?”  You don’t have to hit up a state fair or eat a popsicle before the temperature breaks 50 degrees in order to participate in today’s quirky festivities. Instead, stop by the Metro-North Starbucks and check out the chain’s new cake pops. Part of the Starbucks Petites line, the cake pops feature tiramisu, rocky road cake or vanilla birthday cake on a stick. So treat yourself to "something on a stick" while picking up your mid-day latte. You can begin your spring diet tomorrow.

2. Today, the Village Water Department will begin its periodic water main flushing program in order to prevent discoloration of water during the heavy demand period of the summer. The flushing will continue until all pipes in the system have been systematically flushed. Water might become slightly discolored for a brief period of time, but it is safe for consumption. Clothes may become stained if washed in the water. This week, the cleaning operations will begin in the Greenacres Area, Fox Meadow Area and the Village Business District before proceeding into the Hyatt Field Area. If you feel inconvenienced, just think – it’s better that your tap water be slightly brown than having muddy-colored sprinkler water this summer, huh?

3. Westchester’s County seniors get to exercise their throwing arms and their aims today at AMF White Plains Lanes while competing in the Senior Citizen Bowling Tournament. The Tournament begins at 12 p.m. and is open to all seniors ages 60 and older. The tournament fee is $11, which includes lunch and is payable on day of play. Registration begins at 11 a.m. So swing on by AMF White Plains Lanes on 47 Tarrytown Road with your best ball in tow. You’ll “bowl” everyone over!

4. Go on a scavenger hunt for signs of spring at the Greenburgh Nature Center! Today, “Nature Bugs,” an hour-long program offered towards children ages 2-5, will help children and accompanying adults search for animal activity in the lawn and surrounding woods. And if it’s too cold out for hibernating animals to stir from slumber, never fear – a pre-scheduled visit with one of the museum’s animals is in store as well. Members pay $5 for adults, $4 for children. Non-members pay $9 for adults, $7 for children. Visit the Center’s website for more information.

5. It’s only four days until April, so what gives with the chilly climate? Unfortunately, the weather isn’t slated to warm up until later this week. Today, expect sunny skies with cool winds between 13 and 17 miles per hour. Highs will reach 41, so keep bundled up in your winter coat. The new spring trench can wait until Friday, when highs are expected to climb towards 51. Scheduled your spring break trip to the Bahamas yet? Well, if you haven’t, the recent chill’s certainly a motivating factor to stop making excuses and start browsing travel websites. Cancun’s only a click away!
