Five Things You Need to Know Today: Brumous Skies, Holistic Healthcare and the Future of Digital Media

Spring break is over, and you're finally back from vacation. Here are some tidbits that will hopefully get you back into the local groove.

1. Sure, we’ve all been keeping abreast of the Duck Pond Road house saga, but what’s in store for other antique Village structures?  The Committee for Historic Preservation will meet tonight at 8 p.m. in Rutherford Hall to consider the fates of five local homes: a 43-year-old house on 21 Morris Lane, a 57-year-old Sheldrake Road residence, a 59-year-old abode on 49 Wildwood Road, a home on 39 Oxford Road built in 1951 and a structure on 11 Pinecrest Road built in 1926.

2. Everyone knows that books are gradually transitioning from print to media format. What will happen when they merge with video games? Find out by attending “The Player of the Story: Computer Games and the Future of Fiction” at Sarah Lawrence College today at 5:30 p.m. Hosted by Noah Wardrip-Fruin, an associate professor of computer science at University of California-Santa Cruz, the lecture will examine the future of how stories will be told through digital media. Call (914) 395-2412 or email collegeevents@sarahlawrence.edu for more questions.

3. Japan is struggling, and Westchester County is here to help. A benefit featuring music, donations and other activities designed to raise funds for earthquake victims will be held in the lobby of Greenburgh Town Hall from 12-7 p.m. If you would like to volunteer, contact (914) 993-1504 or contact Judith Bevelle at jbeville@greenburghny.com.

4. Everyone seems to get sick when the seasons switch from winter to spring. Learn how to take care of your spiritual needs, along with your medicinal concerns, at the Westchester division of New York-Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains. At 7 p.m., Reverend Moriah Vecchia will give a lecture called “Narrative Medicine: A Presentation and Performance on the Healing Power of Story and Song. Vecchia’s talk will be held in the auditorium located on the second floor of the hospital’s main building. Attendance is free.

5. If your teen is currently cramming for the SAT verbal, you might know that “brumous” is a synonym for “foggy.” Well, today’s your chance to sprinkle the word into casual conversation because this morning and evening are going to be foggy, with south winds between 5 and 13 miles per hour. This afternoon, though, will be sunny, with highs near 77 – giving you the chance to come up with some good synonyms for “beautiful.”
