Five Things You Need to Know Today: Flood Advisories, Poetry Slams and Free Chocolate

Labor Day has passed, school has started and Scarsdale's come back to life!

1. Whether your kids are fiending for a sweet after-school snack or you simply need a big boost of endorphins to cope with the rainy, post-Labor Day doldrums, either reason's a stellar justification for swinging by 5th Avenue Chocolatiere's Grand Opening this afternoon. From 4:30 to 6 p.m., owners (and Scarsdale residents) David and Shelley Larsen will open their doors to the public with free chocolate samples and a ribbon cutting by Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner. We had you at "free chocolate," huh? 5th Avenue Chocolatiere is located at 450 Central Park Avenue. The shop can be reached at (914) 713-8879.

2. Today's weather is perfect for snuggling in an armchair and reading poetry. But why read it when you can see it performed at tonight? Featuring poet Bill MacMillan, co-founder of the Worcester Poetry Slam and Worcester Poet's Asylum, the event will allow members of the public to share a poem during the open mic session. And no, those Chaucer passages you had to memorize during college don't count! The Poetry Slam will be held in collaboration with the White Plains Public Library Foundation. For more information, call (914) 428-4220 ext. 330

3. An Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory has been issued for Westchester County this afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, today's supposed to yield new rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch as precipitation continues to fall well into the night. And as for the rest of this week, things don't seem to be getting sunnier – gray skies will continue to dominate Scarsdale until this Sunday.

4. Scarsdale Patch is gathering local images of 9/11 and its aftermath. If you have images related to this day in our nation's history—whether it be a train ticket you were carrying in your pocket that day, a keepsake from a loved one or even a photo of where you were on 9/11, we'd like to include it in our gallery. We're also looking for people to interview who have a moving and engaging story to tell about Sept. 11. If you started a charity to help local 9/11 families or first responders, if you decided to become a police officer or joined the Armed Services because of 9/11, or if your life has been indelibly changed by the events of that day, we want to hear from you. Email kirstinfawcett@patch.com if interested.
