Five Things You Need to Know Today: Free SoulCycle Rides, Gourmet Galaxy and Remembering September 11th

Today, register for a free ride at SoulCycle, buy tickets for the Scarsdale-Edgemont Family Counseling Service's Gourmet Galaxy Gala and take a few moments to reflect on the lives and legacies of those who lost their lives on September 11th.

1. Today, citizens across the world are celebrating the fact that Osama bin Laden was apprehended by U.S. military forces and the C.I.A. It’s also a day of remembrance, however, for the many who lost their lives on September 11th. A month ago, Scarsdale Patch columnist Tamera Schreur used her weekly to reflect upon her experience visiting “The Rising,” a monument in Valhalla dedicated to the Westchester residents who perished in the terror attacks. If crazy crowds in Times Square or candlelight vigils at the World Trade Center make you claustrophobic, emulate Schreur by taking a few minutes to stop by the 80-foot steel memorial for a few moments of silence.

2. It’s not too late to get your ticket to the annual ! Held on Wednesday, May 4, novice foodies will arrive at Westchester Country Club to participate in a silent auction and receive a crash course on the menu offerings at participating local restaurants. After bidding on unique items and sampling culinary creations from hotspots such as Haiku, Anna Maria’s, Chat 19 and American Bistro of Tuckahoe, Gourmet Galaxy’s newly-schooled attendees will be faced with the ultimate multiple-choice question: Which restaurant should they hit up the following Saturday evening? The night’s fine dining will also be rounded out with fine wine and delectable desserts. Baked goods from Martine’s Fine Bake Shoppe, Lulu Cake Boutique, Odyssey Chocolates and La Renaissance Patisserie will add a touch of sweetness to the evening’s savory affair, and wines provided by Frederick Wildman & Sons and OR Beer from Captain Lawrence Brewing Company will help local gourmands wash down their sushi with a smile. Gourmet Galaxy is hosted by the Scarsdale/Edgemont Family Counseling Center, which will present the Open Door Award for outstanding community development to Rita Abrons Aranow. Tickets are $200.00 ($150.00 for first time attendees). For more information and tickets, call 723-3281, visit www.sfcsinc.org or email ngs612@hotmail.com.

3. Prepare for some last minute tooting, honking and strumming emanating from your musical child’s bedroom tonight – the Hoff-Barthelson Festival Orchestra, a full symphonic orchestra open to students in grades 9-12, will be holding auditions for the 2011-12 season tomorrow evening from 5-10 p.m.  If you haven’t already scheduled your budding Carnegie Hall soloist for auditions, you can make an appointment by calling the orchestra manager at (845) 429-1032. For more details, visit http://www.hbms.org or call (914) 723-1169.
