Five Things You Need to Know Today: Historic Houses, Local Legislators and the Summer Solstice

Today's the longest day of the year - and here are five things you need to know in order to kick it off the right way!

1. Today’s going to be a really long day – and we don’t mean that in the pejorative sense. June 21 kicks off the northern hemisphere’s summer solstice, meaning that Earth’s axial tilt will shift towards the sun at its maximum of 23° 26', yielding maximum daylight. Spend your extra hours of sunshine picking tomatoes in your garden, strolling through the Village Center with an ice cream cone or gliding through your favorite lap lane at the newly-opened Scarsdale pool – just make sure to get outdoors!

2. Tonight’s Committee for Historic Preservation meeting will evaluate the historical merits of three properties – a house on 14 Fairview Road dating back to 1925, a resident on 4 Windmill Circle built in 1925 and most notably, the 1922-era home on 140 Saxon Woods Road built on property purchased by runaway Louisiana slave Robert Purdy. While the property has been subdivided over 155 years, it remained in the hands of Purdy’s direct descendants until the property was sold to an incorporated construction company earlier this year. Find out what the Committee has in store for the property when they meet tonight at 8 p.m. in Village Hall, and read more from to brush up on the land’s history – and decide where you stand on the issue.

3. Although the Scarsdale Farmers’ Market is only open on weekends, you can still get farm-fresh produce from local Hudson Valley-area farmers for tonight’s dinner at the Farmers’ Market at PepsiCo in Purchase. The Farmers’ Market is held every Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on 800 Anderson Hill Road, east of PepsiCo Headquarters. For more information, call (845) 520-6502 or email fmpepsico@gmail.com

4.  Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, who was re-elected last November, has a reputation for being in the top three percent of legislators for passing bills. In the past month alone, Paulin has passed A7633, which will allow Adult Protective Services (APS) to view records from Child Protective Services (CPS), A113A, which will enable more public libraries to utilize the state constructions grant program and a companion to Senator Suzi Oppenheimer’s Bill 846A, which will allow SUNY Purchase to lease land for the development of a senior residential learning center on campus. Forget summer relaxation - Paulin's  one busy Scarsdale resident!
