Five Things You Need to Know Today: Newspaper Documentaries, National Ice Cream Month and Fruit Trees at the Nature Center

It's a holiday weekend - and the first day of July! Here are five things you need to know to kick your month off the right way.

1. Happy July! Back in 1984, Ronald Reagan declared July to be “National Ice Cream Month.” So as you slurp away at a Good Humor Bar this Fourth of July, remember that you’re fulfilling your responsibilities as an American citizen by enjoying a cool, tasty treat. Well, sort of…

2. Swimming is said to be the best exercise – easy on the joints and a thorough workout for the body’s many muscles. On Thursday, July 7 and Thursday, July 14, Scarsdale’s senior citizens can take advantage of the Village’s aquatic facilities and work their physiques by participating in two free aqua aerobics classes. No sign up is necessary – just stop by at 3 p.m. with a towel and a swim noodle.

3. The Greenburgh Nature Center has planted the seeds for many projects, and now they’re bearing fruit – literally! The Nature Center has been selected as a finalist in the Communities Take Root national competition. Created by Edy’s Fruit Bars and the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, the competition will provide fruit orchards to community organizations to promote healthy eating. Cast one vote a day by registering online, going to the Map or List by State category and selecting Greenburgh Nature Center under New York (Scarsdale). Votes close on Aug. 31, so make sure to sign up as soon as possible.

4. Stop the presses! On July 5, the Pelham Picture House will screen “Page One: Inside The New York Times” at 7 p.m. along with a Q&A discussion led by guests Bruce Headlam, media desk editor for The New York Times, Andrew Rossi, director of “Page One” and Daniel Pine, executive producer of “Page One.” Pricing is $11 for general admission; Seniors, $9; Students, $9; Child, $8; Picture House members are admitted for free. Visit http://www.thepicturehouse.org or call *914) 738-3161 for more information.

5. The American Red Cross in Westchester County is holding an emergency blood drive today in an effort to boost the critically low blood supply due to last winter’s snowfall. All potential donors are encouraged to give blood, especially type O negative donors. The drive will be held in White Plains at 106 N Broadway from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Call 1 (800) RED-CROSS for any questions.
