Five Things You Need to Know Today: Parking Raffles, Historic Preservation Presentations and Prom

The weekend's almost here, and Patch has you covered with all the latest happenings until you leave the office and start your Saturday.

1. It’s prom day! Is your high school senior feeling those pre-bash butterflies? Hopefully, Scarsdale High School’s pre-prom reception will give them a chance to giggle with girlfriends, swagger in their suits and remember to have fun with their best friends as they pose for photos and nibble on refreshments before boarding buses to the Surf Club in New Rochelle. The reception will begin at the Scarsdale High School Brewster Road entrance at 5:15 p.m., giving your teen a little over an hour to preen for the photographers before buses depart from the school parking lot promptly at 6:30 p.m. And if the skies open up, don’t worry about costly hair-dos getting wet – the rain location is Gyms A & B.

2. From the Quaker Meeting House to Trinity Lutheran Church, Scarsdale’s historic buildings are carefully maintained to honor the link between the Village’s storied past and potential-filled future. Tonight, the Scarsdale Forum and the Town and Village Civic Club will host the Neighborhood Character Committee, which will give a speech entitled “Preserving Scarsdale’s Heritage – the Historical Preservation Law and Neighborhood Character.” Attendees will discuss the Village’s current efforts to save historic architecture, as well as potential future revisions to the current preservation laws. The meeting, which will take place in the Scott Room of the Scarsdale Library, will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a reception honoring Friends of the Scarsdale Parks, Friends of the Weinberg Nature Center and Russell Greenleaf before segueing into its official agenda at 8 p.m. For more information, call information, visit the Forum’s website, e-mail office@scarsdaleforum.com or call (914) 723-2829.

3. Duck into a cool art gallery to escape from the muggy, late spring air – and, of course, to take in the works of local artists Laura Clark, Eileen Kleinman and Melinda Tepler. Inspired by the nuances of shared vision, the three women describe their works as “several hours a week of connection, conversation and production,” with “colors and shapes that bloom from the paper, often in series, [and] illustrate both unique single creation and a shared spark. The exhibit is displayed at the Marjorie and Norman Alexander Gallery at the JCC of Mid-Westchester until June 30. For more information, visit the JCC’s website, call (914) 472-3300 or email blusteinc@jccmw.org.
