Five Things You Need to Know Today: Planning Board Meetings, College Scholarships and a Modern Jane Austen

Attend a Planning Board Meeting, apply for a college scholarship and plan to meet a "modern Jane Austen" this weekend at the Scarsdale Public Library.

1. Before you hear the pounding of hammers and the droning of drills emanating from your neighbor’s half-constructed sunroom, take it into consideration that the Planning Board has already reviewed the blueprints, discussed the plans with the site’s owners and determined how the new room’s appearance will fit the surrounding neighborhood’s architectural aesthetic. Tonight, witness the Planning Board in action when they meet in Village Hall at 8 p.m. to discuss wetlands permits, home additions and proposed amendments to the Village Zoning Code relative to the provision of Fair and Affordable Housing.

2. Make sure that the current economic recession doesn’t derail your college student’s education – inform them that they are invited to apply to the Scarsdale Foundation for tuition assistance. Students who have graduated from SHS or live in Scarsdale and have completed their first, second or third year of college are eligible for scholarships. Application materials are available on the Scarsdale Foundation’s website and must be submitted by Friday, June 3. For more information, contact Susie Rush at srush76@gmail.com or (914) 472-7797.

 3. This Saturday, Cathleen Schine, the scribe behind bestselling novels “The Three Weissmans of Westport” and “The Love Letter,” will be speaking at the Scarsdale Public Library this Saturday at 4 p.m. Schine has been lauded by critics as a “modern day Jane Austen,” so be sure to catch her reading – perhaps your granddaughters will be enjoying her works in the future as much as you currently do in the present.

4. Who says humor has to be crude and lowbrow to inspire a few giggles? Ivy Stand-Up, a group of clean-mouthed, witty and, yes, intelligent humorists, will be performing at the Bendheim Performing Arts Center in Scarsdale this Saturday at 8 p.m. Featured performers include Myq Kaplan, a finalist in last season’s Last Comic Standing, and Jon Fisch, who has performed on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham. Tickets are available for purchase on the Center’s website.

5. Spring has finally sprung, meaning that weddings and engagements will start occurring in full force. Just in time for your big day, stationary and paper store Papyrus has started offering 15 percent off of total engraving purchases along with an in-store coupon. The offer is available for a limited time while supplies last, and is valid in stores only. Talk with a sales associate at the Vernon Hills Shopping Center for more details.
