Five Things You Need to Know Today: Poetry Readings, Rock Concerts and a National Day of Silence

It's the weekend! Make the most of your off-time by using this list of things of things to do around Scarsdale tonight and tomorrow evening.

1. We hope you went outside yesterday, because it’s not going to be sunny and 60 degrees again until next Tuesday. This weekend's forecast calls for cloudy skies and a chance of rain, with highs in the lower 50s. Perfect weather for filing last-minute taxes, huh?

2. T.S. Eliot once wrote that April is the cruelest month – but that was before it was declared National Poetry Month, of course! Tonight, celebrate rhythm and rhyme at the Scarsdale Friends Quaker Meeting House, where where poetry enthusiasts will gather to read favorite poems outloud and hear poets Jim Davis and Llyn Clague read selections from their own published works. Refreshments and a book signing will follow the readings. For additional information, call (914) 478-0722 or email llynclague@aol.com. The event is free and open to the public.

3. Tonight’s concert at the Hoff-Barthelson Music School features pianist Edmund Niemann, who will be tinkling the ivories at 8 p.m. along with fellow faculty artist and violinist Gary Kosloski. Enjoy Niemann’s playing, which the New York Times has called “technically dazzling,” as he takes audience-goers on a musical journey visiting works by composers running the gamut from classical (Brahams and Beethoven) to contemporary (Rzewski and Schoenberg). Show prices are $15 for general admission, $14 for seniors and free for students. Reserve your ticket by dialing (914) 723-1169.

4. If your chatterbox teen is strangely silent today, it’s not because he or she has been struck with a case of lockjaw. Today’s National Day of Silence, an annual event during which students take a vow of silence to bring attention to homophobic name-calling, bullying and harassment. The Memorial United Methodist Church in White Plains will be hosting a Silence Breaking event at 4 p.m. in which students from schools across Westchester are invited to participate in poetry, music and open mic events.

5. Scarsdale rockers “Someday Radio” will be playing a gig at The Heritage Pub in Yonkers on Saturday night from 10 p.m.-1 a.m. Pubs, pints and a pounding bass line. Sounds like a perfect evening out to us!
