Five Things You Need to Know Today: Read for Raffle Tickets, Remembering 9/11 and Blog for Scarsdale Patch

Cool off with ice cream provided by the Scarsdale Public Library reading game, start thinking ahead towards fall by planning how you'll remember the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and find a new way to express yourself -- by blogging for us!

1.   State Test Scores Released

The New York State Department of Education just released state test results for the English Language Arts and Mathematics Assessments. The assessments measure performance in these subject areas for students in the third to eighth grade. Check out Scarsdale Patch later today to see how the district fared.

The 10th Anniversary of September 11th is about a month away. Several organizations are already making plans to commemorate one of the most tragic days in our nation’s history. Westchester County announced this week that it will hold its annual ceremony at twilight at the Kensico Dam Plaza. The event will take place at 6 p.m. so that people can attend other commemoration events earlier in the day.

3.   Blog for Patch

Become a blogger for Scarsdale Patch. We already have great bloggers, from 19-year-old Carmela Bonito who just started blogging about her battle with Lyme Disease to Louise Kelley and the students at the Colonial Times Newspaper (check out their blogs in our Local Voices section). We want more local people to join our roster of great contributors. If you want to become a Patch blogger, you can sign up here.

4.   See Nature Through A Telephoto Lens

Georgia O’Keefe viewed nature with her own perspective, and so do the 27 participating members of the Color Camera Club of Westchester. Check out their work at ArtsWestchester’s “” exhibit from 12-5 p.m. today. Enjoy photography ranging from natural landscape scenes to flower portraits. For more information, visit Arts Westchester's website or call (914) 428-4220. Admission is free.

5. Win Sweet Treats in the Summer Reading Game

If you'd like your child's nose to be buried in a book, try appealing to another part of his or her body — the sweet tooth — to persuade them to pick up that copy of "The Hunger Games" that's been collecting dust on the coffee table all summer long. Scarsdale Haagen Dazs owner Steven Mandani has donated 100 $5 gift cards to the Scarsdale Public Library to reward eager readers for their participation in the Summer Reading Game. Every time a child enrolled in the Summer Reading Game reports a book they've read, they will receive a raffle card for the chance to win cool, tasty treats. 10 gift cards will be raffled off each week of the program, so make sure to turn those pages! Sure, reading is its own reward - but prizes are nice too, huh? The game ends on August 24, so make sure to sign up now!
