Five Things You Need to Know Today: Roller Coasters, Bagels & Babies and Flag Football

It's the middle of summer, but things are far from dead in Scarsdale and the surrounding Westchester region!

  1. It’s the middle of summer, but this upcoming fall isn’t as far-flung as it seems – especially since the Scarsdale Recreation Department is already recruiting for Flag and Youth Football Leagues. If your child is in first through fourth grades, they are eligible to sign up for Flag Football. And if all that food vanishing from your refrigerator’s shelves are helping your third to eighth grader develop into a broad-shouldered linebacker, you might want to consider registering them for the Youth Football League… before they start using all that excess energy to play catch with your Fabergé egg collection. Visit the Recreation Department's website to register online – and don’t waste another second thinking about fall until the leaves start to, well, fall…
  2. Camp hasn’t started, your teen’s getting antsy and you’re getting equally antsy at the sight of him or her watching endless hours of CSI: Miami reruns on your sofa. The Scarsdale Teen Center’s two upcoming field trips will get your couch potato out of the living room and into a line for the fastest, fiercest roller coasters at Six Flags and Playland – and if you register soon, they might get to attend for free! The Playland Trip costs $35 and includes entrance to the park, unlimited rides and transportation. The field trip will take place from July 13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and registration is required by July 8. The first 10 participants to sign up will receive a waived fee. For the Six Flags trip, interested parties should register by July 22 for the July 29th field trip. The trip costs $50, and fees include transportation, snacks on the bus and admission. The van will leave from the Scarsdale Teen Center at 9 a.m. and return at 9 p.m. Fill out and mail or hand-deliver a Trip Registration Form with full payment. For more info, email Info@ScarsdaleTeenCenter.com.
  3. The Greenburgh Nature Center is , and you can help. The Center has completed Phase Two of their Core Master Plan by choosing a site for the future playground on the Center’s grounds. However, the fun, eco-friendly play structures that will provide children hours of exercise and enjoyment won’t exist without your tax-deductible donation. Visit the Center’s website to find out more on how you can help transform the playground from a pipe dream into a reality – and a future destination for sunny spring days spent with your grandchildren, daughters or sons.
  4. 4. Bagels and babies and baby-sitters, oh my! Westchester Reform Temple Early Childhood Center (WRT ECC) will host a free Bagels & Babies program this morning to give moms, dads and caregivers a safe space for their tots to play with peers… and a much-needed break, too. This drop-in program will take place on Mondays from 9:30-10:30 a.m., July 11, 18, August 1 and on Wednesdays on July 6, 13, 20 and 27. Bagels & Babies is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. All sessions take place at Westchester Reform Temple Early Childhood Center’s Library at 255 Mamaroneck Road, Scarsdale. For more information call the Early Childhood Center office at (914) 723-7727, visit www.wrtemple.org or email questions to Anna Stampfli at anna@joshstampfli.com.
  5. 5. School may be out for the summer, but it's still in session at the Pelham Picture House, which will feature a lecture by Weselyan film professor Scott Higgins examining the art and history of classical Hollywood cinema tonight from 6-9 p.m. Impress the guests at your next dinner party with your newfound knowledge of film noir as a style and developments and lighting and composition as you deconstruct golden greats such as "Citizen Kane," "Meet me in St. Louis," "Double Indemnity," "My Darling Clementine" and "The Best Years Of Our Lives." Classes cost $30. Visit the Picture House’s website, call (914) 738-3161 or email events@thepicturehouse.org to learn more.
