Five Things You Need to Know Today: School Board Meetings, Teen Center Fundraisers and Exploring the Afterlife

Today, attend a School Board Meeting, read about the Scarsdale Teen Center's Night of Rock and explore Judaism's conception of the afterlife at Westchester Reform Temple.

1. Before you hear the pounding of hammers and the droning of drills emanating from your neighbor’s half-constructed sun room, take it into consideration that the Board of Architectural Review has already reviewed the blueprints, discussed the plans with the site’s owners and determined how the new room’s appearance will fit the surrounding neighborhood’s architectural aesthetic. Tonight, witness the Board in action when they meet in Village Hall at 7 p.m... and feel free to weigh in on whether you think your neighbor's new portico is an eyesore to your street.

2. At 8 p.m., a school Board Meeting will be held tonight at Scarsdale High School in Room 170-172  to discuss buses to prom, casting and canvassing challenge/paper ballots for the Scarsdale School Board elections and an authorization for the school lunch manager to provide documentation to the Department of Health for a permit to operate school cafeterias. Let's give cheers for safe prom evening commutes, clean and safe cafeterias and witnessing local democracy in action!

3. What happens after you die? Rabbi Jonathan Blake will explore Judaism's conception of death and the afterlife in the first of a five-part lecture titled "Death, Immortality and Afterlife in Judaism" tonight from 7:15-9:15 p.m. at Westchester Reform Temple. Explore texts and traditions with the Rabbi as you reexamine your faith and hopefully find deeper comfort, meaning and understanding in its message.

5. Benefits often mean canapes, cocktails and stiff conversation. Last Saturday evening, however, the Scarsdale Teen Center's Night of Rock flouted preconceived notions of fundraising by hosting a Night of Rock. Featuring local bands, beer and hopefully some bad behavior from otherwise responsible local adults (I kid, I kid), the Night of Rock proved to be a success for both participants and hosts alike. Read more about the evening's festivities later today in Janie Rosman's account of the fun she had rocking out to The Blueberries!
