Five Things You Need to Know Today: Social Networking for Seniors, Ski Trips and Snow Sculptures

Today, seniors will get the chance to learn about social networking sites, parents have one last chance to register teens for the Recreation Department's ski trip and three more snow sculptures stand in Sahit Muja's front yard!

1.  If you’re a senior who spends more time reading books than browsing Facebook and the only kinds of “tweets” you’re familiar with are the noises emitted from your backyard bird feeder, you might want to attend today’s Social Networking seminar.  Hosted by At Home in Scarsdale Village, the event features computer educational specialist Carol Freidman, who will teach attendees the tools and tricks surrounding today’s latest Internet social networking sites. The seminar will be held at the Scarsdale Woman’s Club on 37 Drake Road at 1 p.m. Call (914) 723-4529 for more information.

2. Sure, social networking has taken over the world. That doesn’t mean, however, that making contacts face-to-face – as opposed to clicking on a new colleague or connection’s name and picture via computer screen – is completely dead. Tonight, the Professional Women of Westchester will be holding their first co-ed networking event at the Ritz Carlton restaurant 42 in White Plains. And who says that contacts formed have to be purely professional? The evening’s mix-and-mingle will feature a Valentine’s Day party as well! Tickets are $15, and can be purchased at http://www.professionalwomenofwestchester.com.

3. Today’s the last day to sign your teenager up for the Scarsdale Recreation Department’s ski trip to Belleayre Mountain on Feb. 13. The day-long snow sojourn costs $85, including transportation, lift tickets and a ski lesson. Make sure to get plenty of sleep the night before, as the group will depart from Village Hall at 6 a.m. and return at approximately 5:30 p.m. Also, equipment rentals will not be available at the mountain, so makes sure to bring your own equipment or stop by Hickory & Tweed in Armond or Pedigree Ski Shop in White Plains. All girls and boys from 6th to 9th grades are welcome to attend. Got all that? Whew. Now go to the Village website to sign up. It should be all downhill from here!

 4. Sahit Muja, the 134 Saxon Woods Road resident who last month constructed a giant cat, snow lizard and sculpture of Bill Clinton out of snow, has built three more icy images from his front lawn’s wintry mix – large-scale replicas of the Statue of Liberty, Mother Teresa and George Washington! Stop by to take pictures and admire Muja’s work before the early spring that the groundhog predicted finally arrives.

 5. Big news for AOL today – the company has acquired the Huffington Post. Find out more about by reading the press release detailing this exciting new business venture on Ariana Huffington’s now-eponymous news blog.
