Five Things You Need to Know Today: Teen Writers Conferences, Friday the 13th and Bicycles on the Bronx River Parkway

Today, attend the Teen Writers Conference at Scarsdale High School, learn about the origins of Friday the 13th and tighten your bicycle's chains before hitting the Bronx River Parkway this weekend on Bicycle Sunday.

  1. Today’s Friday the 13th! If you suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia, you’ll be happy to know that today’s spooky stories stem from a decidedly un-scary origin. Frigga from Norse mythology was believed by Scandinavians to hold a meeting with 11 other witches and the devil – a nefarious cabal of 13 – every Friday. So if you have fun with today's creepy cultural portrayals in flicks such as “Friday the 13,” snuggle up with a bowl of popcorn and a stack of horror DVDs tonight. And if you don’t? Well, just remember that it’s just another day…  and the start of the weekend, at that!
  2. For several years, the annual Scarsdale Young Writer’s Conference has inspired Heathcote’s budding Blooms and Edgewood’s aspiring Austers to pick up a pen and scribble their souls onto a piece of paper. Now, adolescents will receive the same opportunity through the Scarsdale Library’s Teen Writers Conference. Tonight, esteemed young adult authors including Todd Strasser and Alice Coleman will teach a series of workshops from 3-5 p.m. to help teens develop their creative writing and journalism abilities.
  3. Starting next Wednesday, workers will begin Stage II of the Popham Road Bridge construction project. Expect an overhaul of the bridge's new south section adjacent to the existing bridge along with the Freightway Open Lot retaining wall, along with an extension of the inbound platform. This stage of the project is expected to last until next October, so prepare for some rerouted traffic - vehicles traveling to East Parkway from east bound Popham Road will be eliminated, and left turns onto East Parkway will be prohibited. And as for cars traveling eastbound over the bridge, they can turn left at the Chase Road intersection.
  4.  Today's League of Woman Voters meeting be held at the Scarsdale Golf Club Clubway at 11 a.m. Following the meeting will be a lunch and a lecture from Riverkeeper Executive Director Paul Gallay, who will give a talk entitled "Indian Point and the Future of Energy in the Hudson Valley." Admission is $45.
  5. This weekend, forgo the usual "Sunday drive" in favor of a bicycle cruise along the Bronx River Parkway. The road will be closed from Scarsdale Road in Yonkers to the White Plains County Center from 10 a.m -2 p.m, giving you the chance to bike the 13.1 mile stretch and enjoy the fresh air. Who needs SoulCycle on a warm spring day?
