Five Things You Need to Know Today: Thunderstorms, Hometown Heroes and Author Lectures

Today, patchy fog and thunderstorms will thwart your morning commute, Carlos Eire will give a lecture at the Scarsdale Public Library and the the entire country is discussing last night's Oscars - and a certain Scarsdale High School alum.

1.  Scarsdale has a new hometown hero! Aaron Sorkin, a 1979 graduate of Scarsdale High School, won last night’s Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Sorkin based his semi-biographical film off “The Accidental Billionaires” by Ben Mezrich, which details the creation of social networking site Facebook by Dobbs Ferry native Mark Zuckerberg… and the multiple lawsuits that arose once Zuckerberg’s brainchild became an international phenomenon.

2. Now that it's thawing out, send in pictures of winter storm damage around Scarsdale for a special photo gallery by emailing kirstin.fawcett@patch.com. Unpaved potholes? Slushy sidewalks that still need to be cleared out? Anything goes!

3. Tonight, Yale professor  and National Book Award-winning memoirist Carolos Eire will be discussing his works “Waiting for Snow in Havana” and “Learning to Die in Miami” at the Scarsdale Public Library. The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m., and is sponsored by the Yale Westchester Alumni Association. Visit the library or Yale Westchester’s websites or call Rich Fabbro at (914) 391-3707 for more information.

4. Everyone says that “April showers bring May flowers,” but have you ever noticed that most of the rain arrives in March? The National Weather Service forecasts that today will be  balmy yet rainy, with highs reaching 56 and afternoon thunderstorms appearing after 1 p.m. Patchy fog is also supposed to appear before 10 a.m., so put on your brights while driving during your morning commute.

5. Today marks the end of Black History Month, so it’s fitting that the Westchester County Board of Legislators will be taking tonight to honor the legacy of Prince Hall Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star. Prince Hall, the father of Black Masonry in the United States, will be memorialized and remembered at Westchester County Offices on 148 Martine Ave. at 6 p.m. Call (914) 995-4122 for further details.
