Five Things You Need to Know Today: Village Board Meetings, Local Discounts and the 'Big Read'

Don't let yesterday's snowfall deter you from venturing out to Village Board meetings, author readings and local stores that are offering big discounts that make a big difference.

  1. If you haven’t had the chance to clear the snow and ice off your car’s hood today, do it now – it’s supposed to be clear and sunny today, with highs near 37 and north winds between 6 and 8 miles per hour. Tomorrow’s temperatures will climb towards 42, but snow will begin to fall again after midnight, covering the region with another 1 – 2 inches. Break out the anti-freeze now!
  2. Tonight, Borders Books & Music will launch their “Big Read” winter-spring selection program by hosting a reading by Eastchester High School alumna Andi Rosenthal. Rosenthal will be sharing excerpts from her historical novel “The Bookseller’s Sonnets.” The event is free, and complimentary appetizers will be served – so eat a light dinner, leave your credit cards at home and prepare for an engaging evening of literature, conversation and community.
  3. Even though the Village Board is currently seeking new volunteers, they’re still holding regular meetings to discuss recent community developments, including the Heathcote 5 Corners development, Village wetlands permits and the Popham Road bridge construction project. Find out what the Board’s latest plans and decisions are by attending their open meeting tonight at 8 p.m. in Village Hall.
  4. Ticket sales begin today for Lord & Taylor’s Do Good fundraiser. Buy a $5 in stores at any register or online and receive a Bonus 20 percent Savings Coupon for one item, plus a 15 percent Savings Pass to use on anything store-wide, with the exception of cosmetics and fragrances. All ticket proceeds will go to local non-profit groups. Stop by the Lord & Taylor at 750 White Plains Road to participate – a good discounted sweater can help warm up an otherwise chilly day.
  5. It’s a sad time for bookstores right now, what with the imminent closing of Borders and Reading, Writing & Wrapping’s recent demise. Visit The Voracious Reader in Larchmont if you miss the conviviality, community and intriguing titles that only small-town independent vendors seem to offer – and participate on their Toddler Story Time, offered every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesday at 2 p.m. Call (914) 630-4581 or e-mail info@thevoraciousreader.com for more information.
