Five Things You Need to Know Today: Village Election Results, Pirate Camps and a Johnny Rockets in Scarsdale

Today, find out who won yesterday's Village elections, where to buy a frothy milkshake and how your budding buccaneer can find a first mate for his or her imaginary pirate ship.

1. Miriam Levitt-Flisser is Scarsdale’s new mayor! Due to two surprise write-in candidates for mayor and Village trustee, yesterday’s elections yielded a record 983 votes, excluding write-in and absentee ballots. Stacey Brodsky, and Bob Harrison were also elected to their first terms as Village trustee, and incumbent Robert Steves was selected to serve for a second term. 2. Would you like some fries with that shake? Fries that aren’t served drizzled in truffle oil and a milkshake that is devoid of crème fraiche topping with grated cocoa powder and Belgian chocolate drizzle? Scarsdale’s restaurants serve their own high-end versions of “fast food,” but oftentimes one craves a sloshing milkshake in a paper cup and a bucket of grease-soaked spuds over more refined fair. Therefore, burger enthusiasts will be pleased to find out that Johnny Rockets is opening in Scarsdale! Check out our piece on new local business openings  later today for more details on when everyone’s favorite all-American fast food chain is opening its doors to the 10583 zip code.

 3. Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of… apple juice? This statement isn’t as strange as it sounds if you apply it to your aspiring swashbuckler’s time at the “It’s a Pirate’s Life for Me!” Spring Break Program. Hosted by the Scarsdale Parks and Recreation Department on April 19, this pirate-themed afternoon at the Scarsdale Girl Scout House will allow budding buccaneers to decorate a pirate ship, design maps to find buried treasure and eat pirate cupcakes. Registration information is available on the Village’s Recreation site

4. What’s your favorite rainy day song? Mine’s “Ballad for a Rainy Day” by English New Wave band XTC. And my iPod’s most likely going to be playing it on repeat today, because this afternoon’s chance of precipitation is 80 percent. Rainfall will occur mainly before 3 p.m., and accumulation will most likely add up to between a quarter and a half-inch. Check in with the National Weather Service for more details on today's local forecast.

5. A Board of Appeals meeting will take place tonight in Village Hall at 8 p.m. Stop by during the open floor session to share your opinions on various agenda items, including the multi-family development at 2-4 Weaver Street and the two-story retail building construction on 1 Palmer Ave. After all, it’s your Village – make your voice count. (Just don’t let it go over the time limit…)
