Five Things You Need to Know Today: Water Conservation, Finals Night and a New Heathcote School Song

Turn off your sprinkler system this morning, send your teen to the Scarsdale Public Library to study for finals and find out the name of that new tune your Heathcote student has been humming for the past few days. (Hint: it's the new school song!)

1. Even if you hadn’t had your first cup of coffee yet, you probably noticed that your water pressure was a little lower than usual yesterday morning. Well, that’s because the climbing water demand has been steadily matching the climbing June temperatures. Village staff want to wash that problem out of everyone’s hair by requesting that residents reduce their lawn watering in the morning and implement water conservation measures whenever possible. So until the Village’s newly renovated pumping station is activated, try turning off your sprinklers in the wee hours and wait until dusk to water your grass.

2. Speaking of the wee hours, be prepared to witness your high school student staying up until the break of dawn this week as they cram for finals (while procrastinating by checking out friends’ prom photos on Facebook and asking you how to work the mammoth Williams-Sonoma espresso machine you got for Christmas last year, of course). And if you find yourself frazzled by finals, sick of holding up flashcards and worried that your coffee-guzzling senior will cause your Concordia Coffee Systems Acorto Espresso Machine to explode, send them to the Scarsdale Public Library for “Finals Night.” The library will stay open until 11 p.m., and snack sales will provide both brain fuel for studying students and funds for the Scarsdale Public Library Teen Advisory Board. Who says studying can’t be fun? (Well, besides actual students, of course…)

3. From the Quaker Meeting House to Trinity Lutheran Church, Scarsdale’s historic buildings are carefully maintained to honor the link between the Village’s storied past and potential-filled future. To preserve local history, the Village of Scarsdale has retained Li/Saltzman Architects, P.C. to conduct a Historic Resources Survey within the Village to evaluate buildings, structures, sites and/or objects for recognition and possible designation as a landmark due to historic, architectural and/or cultural significance. Li/Saltzman will be conducting a “windshield survey” through June and July, meaning they will be driving throughout the Village to take pictures and make notes on buildings, structures and sites. But don’t worry – nobody will be staring at your historic brick Colonial with binoculars from a parked car. The survey will occur on public property only, excepting private properties that owners wish to receive a closer inspection.

4. The Planning Board will hold a Work Session in the Trustees Conference Room of Village Hall at 8 p.m. to discuss the referral from the Village Board to consider a potential amendment to the zoning ordinance regarding the provision of Fair and Affordable Housing. For more background on the ordinance, which would compel developers in Scarsdale to set aside 10 percent of new housing construction for low-income families and to market those units to minorities, read about on Scarsdale Patch.

5. This spring, Heathcote Elementary School students are singing a brand new song – literally! Heathcote music teacher Katherine Bescherer has written a new school song, “We Are The Future of the World,” which will be sung at the school’s Moving Up Ceremony next Tuesday at 9 a.m. To quote Scarsdale Public Schools Director of Public Information Vicki Presser, “Bring your iPhones and your tissues!”
