Five Things You Need to Know Today: Yom Kippur Services, Art Exhibits and A Haunted Playland

It's Friday! Here's what's going on around Scarsdale today and this weekend.

1. This upcoming Saturday afternoon offers lots of recreational activities for Scarsdale residents. Do you feel like taking in "Out of Cordoba," a documentary about Muslims and Jews in Medieval Spain, at the Scarsdale Public Library starting at 2:30 p.m.? Or discovering bargains at the Free the Children Tag Sale, held on 85 Secor Road between 10 a.m.-4 p.m.? Maybe you'll feel like swinging by the SFCF Truck and Family Fun Day at between 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Either way, one thing's for sure — you definitely won't be bored this weekend. 

2. The works of Arthur Beach, an artist and longtime Scarsdale resident, will be celebrated with an this Sunday at the . Refreshments will be served at the reception, which will occur between 2-4 p.m. And if you're too busy to stop by the Nature Center this weekend, don't fret — the exhibit will run until Jan. 8, 2012. 4. Some of us are saving our vocal chords for some serious screaming sessions at the upcoming haunted house. But if you don't think it's too soon in the season to get spooked, swing by Rye Playland's tonight at 8 p.m. Park admission will allow you entrance into a haunted mausoleum featuring a spooky wine cellar, a library, a sanitarium and a waterfront cemetery in the sand. Hours for Scared by the Sound are Fridays, 8 p.m.-11 p.m.; Saturdays, 7 p.m.- 11 p.m.; Sundays, 7 p.m.-10 p.m. and Monday (Halloween night), 7 p.m.-10 p.m. Prices are adults, $15; children under 12, $11. 5. While Scarsdale isn't on the water, Tropical Storm Irene ensured that the landlocked village felt like it was on Long Island Sound, minus the sailboats and sun. If you're still seeking disaster aid from FEMA and the NYS Office of Emergency Management (SOEM), you can stop by the Village of Mamaroneck to schedule an assignment at their Mobile Disaster Recovery Center at Harbor Island Park. The Recovery Center opened yesterday and will be open today and Saturday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Residents and business may apply for disaster aid in person, online or by phone. Register by calling FEMA’s registration number at 1-800-621-3362 or online. For those with speech or hearing disabilities, use the TTY number at 1-800-462-7585. FEMA advises people to register by phone or on-line in advance of visiting the disaster center.
