Making Strides for Breast Cancer Research

Scarsdale locals are making a difference by joining forces to help the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk."

Brian Levy, 31, of local sweet shop All Good Things has joined forces with the Scarsdale Striders' team leader Sheryl Braun to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk." From Thursday to Saturday, the Scarsdale Striders will garner awareness and funds for the cause by scooping ice cream for customers.

Braun reached out to Levy through a mutual friend, who she said had voiced interest in “doing something philanthropic.” According to Levy, 15 percent of all the proceeds from the All Good Things event will be given to the Scarsdale Striders as a donation to their team.

This marks the first year that All Good Things is participating in this event, but both Braun and Levy are no stranger to this cause -- both have had mothers who battled breast cancer.

Along with having several cancer survivors as family members, Braun’s mother is a two-time breast cancer survivor. This event is a really great opportunity to do something to help others and fight back," Braun said.

Levy, whose mother battled breast cancer when he was a teenager, described the cause as “very important -- especially in this community.”

Braun has been working for the American Cancer Society for the last few years as a patient navigator and team recruiter for “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer." She formed the Scarsdale Striders in 2009 in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness in her local area.

The weekend-long event will commence with the Scarsdale Striders meeting up at Manhattanville College on Oct. 16., where they will participate in a 5-mile non-competitive walk that will cumulate around noon.

"Last year, over 13,000 people attended 'Making Strides Against Breast Cancer,' and approximately over $1.3 million was raised for the cumulative campaign," Braun said.

The American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” campaign began in 1993 in New England. Today, the walk has joined together teams from all over America who will walk a distance ranging anywhere from 3 to 5 miles in an effort to educate people in their local area about breast cancer -- and hopefully inspire them to donate. To date, the campaign has raised $400 million going to research and various forms of assistance to breast cancer patients.
