The Great Escape: Fort Tryon Park and The Cloisters

Who knew that a lush, tranquil oasis of nature and culture existed in New York City?

At the tip of Manhattan’s seething urban jungle, a tranquil oasis of trees, heather gardens and winding stone paths reminds urban dwellers and suburban day trippers alike that the city does sometimes sleep…  or at least, it does above 187th Street.

Fort Tryon Park and its adjacent famed neighbor, The Cloisters, lay on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River. Park-goers are treated to a panoramic view of the George Washington Bridge and a glimpse of downtown skyline – the only indication that they are still standing in Manhattan.

Visitors often hike the park’s 67-acres, photograph or paint the scenic riverscape or picnic in the park’s wide, grassy lawns during warmer seasons. And if one is not a nature enthusiast or aspiring shutterbug, they can always dine on a brunch of challah french toast or roast duck confit at the park’s Zagat Rated New Leaf Café before popping in to The Cloisters to admire medieval tapestries, illuminated manuscripts and marble sculptures.
