Tremors in New City: Did You Feel Them?

New City and Congers residents answer the question, Did you feel the earthquake?

For most New City residents, the earthquake passed unnoticed. But some of us did feel the ground shake. Facebook erupted around 2 pm with the pressing question Did you feel it?

Monica Osher, age 17 from New City, was packing for college when she felt a rumble.

“My sister called me about five minutes after I noticed my bed shaking and said, ‘Are you O.K. after the earthquake?’ and I said, ‘There was an earthquake'?” laughs Osher.

Her older sister Sarah only knew about the earthquake because of what she read on Facebook, after she felt the quake herself.

“I thought my vertigo was acting up,” says Sarah Osher. My chair was moving and the fish tank next to me... the water was moving then my desk started to shake... and it was over.”

No damage was done to the Osher home.

Sarah Osher was not the only New City resident to blame the unusual movement on her health. Regina O’Hara, also of New City, says she thought she was about to faint, and that she was imagining the shaking she felt.

“I thought my equilibrium was off,” she explains.

O’Hara quickly turned on the television to find news about the passing earthquake. Her two young daughters, Isabella and Grace, and her husband, Patrick, say they felt nothing.

A good number of us were unfazed by the earthquake. Jonathan Vayalumkal, age 18 of Congers tells his story.

I actually didn’t know about it ‘till I went to the bank. I was out all day. I woke up and went out to eat with some friends and our church priest. Then I went to run some errands like Shop Rite and going to some banks so I was out until 3. The teller at the bank mentioned it... talking about how England felt ‘it’ and she didn’t feel ‘it’ so I went on my phone to see what she was talking about.

Many Rockland residents spent the day out and about like Vayalumkal, unaware of what happened.

I was sitting at my desk in my office in my home in Omni Court Condo's in New City when all of a sudden everything started shaking and house seemed to sway a bit. Lasted about 10 seconds and ran outside at exactly same time as one of my neighbors. We both yelled we had an earthquake at same time. I have felt one other earthquake before but this was much stronger. Went back in house and it took about 15 minutes or so until CNN and others reported it.

I was sitting in a chair, working on my computer. I felt my knees start to shake and then my legs. I thought I was having some health issue and then rumbling from underneath the chair - now that was a health issue I don't want to think about! Then the floor shook and I thought it was under me in the basement when I realized I was IN the basement.. then it was over...

I was sitting on the couch in my Congers home and all of a sudden felt the couch moving back and forth about 3 quick times. I thought it was all in my mind and just went back to what I was doing until my girlfriend in New City called and asked if I felt anything like she just did and that it must be an earthquake! Boy, was I surprised!
