Westchester's Gere, Close Nominated For Golden Globes

Richard Gere and Glenn Close, who live in Bedford and Pound Ridge, respectively, both received nominations for their work in film.

The Golden Globe nominations are out, and this year's picks include locals Richard Gere, for his role in the recent film, Arbitrage, and Glenn Close, for her role in the television drama, Damages.

Gere, a Bedford resident and proprietor of the Bedford Post Inn, is nominated for best actor in a dramatic film and will go up against Daniel Day Lewis for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln, John Hawkes for The Sessions, Joaquin Phoenix in The Master and Denzel Washington in Flight.

Close, a Pound Ridge resident, is nominated for best actress in a television drama and is competing against Connie Britton for Nashville, Claire Danes for Homeland, Michelle Dockery for Downton Abbey Season 2 and Juliana Margelies for The Good Wife.

Close said the nomination was a fitting end for the show, which ends its five-season run this year.

"What an incredible ride we all had in Damages, and I have to think I'm representing the whole team, because I certainly wouldn't be here without them," reports USA Today.

It's not the first time residents from the area have been nominated for gold statuettes from Hollywood.

Last year locals nominated for Oscars included Katonah residents James Spione for his film, Incident in Baghdad; Fox Lane alum Rooney Mara for her performance as a computer hacker in Girl With a Dragon Tattoo and Glenn Close, again, for her role in Albert Nobbs.

And, Bret McKenzie's song, Man or Muppet, was nominated for Best Original Song and was performed by none other than Peter Linz of Katonah, who starred as Walter in the newest film in the Muppet movie franchise.

The 70th Annual Golden Globes air Jan. 13 and will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
