Southern Westchester DeCicco's is Closing

Decicco's in Bronxville will be shutting its doors for good at the end of this month. The company, which owns ten other locations, cites stiff competition from chain grocery stores for the closure.

Decicco's has been competing with large supermarkets, such as ShopRite and Stop and Shop, for a number of years. The location has a Bronxville post office address, but is located in the Chester Heights section of Eastchester.

People from Eastchester, Bronxville and Tuckahoe frequent the small chain for its speciality goods, such as fresh fish and bakery items. The first DeCicco Food Market opened in the Bronx back in the early 70s.

Many people in the area say the closure will leave a large void in the communities surrounding the Bronxville Decicco's location.

"It's a shame that it takes the closing of a business for residents to realize how much they depend on it," said Bronxville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Susan Miele. "The closing of DeCicco supermarket has left the neighboring community downright distraught. Not only because they're so reliant on it being there, but also because the store's replacement, CVS, is a prospect they're trying to fend off."

The Bronxville Decicco's location has been open for 27 years. The company currently has locations in Ardsley, Brewster, Cross River, Jefferson Valley, New City, Pelham, Scarsdale, Harrison, Cornwall and Armonk.

"The Chamber can't emphasize this enough: We need to support the businesses we value," said Miele. "If we don't, they might shut down. And their replacements could disappoint us. Those looking to save a few dollars here and there are only shooting themselves in the foot."
