Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale

Hammerstein (pronounced Hammer-stine) died from stomach cancer nine months after The Sound of Music opened on Broadway on November 16, 1959. He was cremated and his ashes are stored at the non-sectarian Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum on Secor Road in Hartsdale.

This cemetery is also the final resting place for Kern who was buried there in 1945. Hammerstein and Kern were thus reunited after collaborating during their lifetimes on many Broadway musical songs and the non-Broadway song "The Last Time I Saw Paris" in 1941 following the collapse of France during World War II. Composer Sigmund Romberg, who with Hammerstein's book and lyrics brought The Desert Song to Broadway, is also buried at Ferncliff.

Broadway figures interned at this Hartsdale cemetery range from Broadway's elite to Ziegfeld girls and also include "My Fair Lady" playwright/lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, playwright and director Moss Hart, and stage actor Basil Rathbone who also played Sherlock Holmes in 14 Hollywood films. Other luminaries buried at Ferncliff include famed actress/singer Judy Garland, the legendary television host Ed Sullivan who grew up in Port Chester, actress Joan Crawford, songwriter Ray Bloch, jazz singer Cab Calloway, Stork Club owner Sherman Billingsley and restaurant owner "Toots" Shor.

Richard Rodgers who collaborated with Hammerstein on many great Broadway hits starting with Oklahoma died and was cremated in 1979; the location of his ashes has been kept secret although some reports say they were scattered at sea.
