Frankie & Fanucci's Introduces Gluten-Free Pizza to Hartsdale Location

Personal-size gluten-free pizza at $11.95 has been added to the menu (the pies are approximately 11 inches in diameter). In an unrelated announcement, the eatery says it will sell personal-size regular margherita pizzas for $1 tonight only.

has introduced personal-size, gluten-free pizza to its menu; the gluten-free pies measure about 11 inches in diameter and sell for $11.95 (plus tax).

A separate station is used to prepare the gluten-free pies. Nagy pointed out that although the restaurant's regular 800-degree, wood-burning oven is used, each gluten-free pie is placed in the oven on an individual tray.

Gluten intolerance—or celiac disease—is a digestive disease that interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food. If people suffering from celiac disease consume gluten—which is found in wheat, rye, barley and some medicines and vitamins—their immune system responds by destroying or damaging the villi in their intestine that control nutritional absorption into the bloodstream.

More than two million people in the U.S. have celiac disease, or 1 in 133 people, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The restaurant also serves salads, hot-pressed panini, pasta, beer, wine and house-made Italian desserts. But, at this time, only pizza is available gluten-free.

In a separate announcement, co-owner Brad Nagy said that the eatery's regular personal-size margherita pizzas can be purchased on Monday, July 11 for one dollar beginning at 5 p.m. and ending when the dough runs out (estimated by Nagy to occur around 10 p.m.). No coupons are required. The one-day-only offer applies at the Frankie & Fanucci's stores in Mamaroneck and Hartsdale.

Nagy said, "our Neapolitan-style thin-crust pizzas emerge from the 800-degree oven having charred crusts with blistered edges, a nice crackly exterior and tender, chewy sponge texture."

The one-buck-pizza party, he added, is being conducted to celebrate Frankie & Fanuccis' winning "reader picks" for 2011 by Westchester magazine for the categories: New Restaurant and Pizza.

Frankie & Fanucci's will participate in Westchester magazine's “Best of Westchester 2011 Party” on July 20 at Glenn Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, NY, but, instead of serving pizza, the restaurant will award guests a voucher for a free pizza at either one of its restaurants.
