Community Corner

Author David Kertzer to Speak at Westchester Reform Temple

Westchester Reform Temple welcomes the community on Sunday, February 2, at
9:30 am, for a morning with David Kertzer, author of the new book “The
Pope and Mussolini: The Secret History of Pius XI and the Rise of Fascism in Europe.”  The program will be introduced by Rabbi Jonathan Blake.

“The Pope
and Mussolini” (Random House, 2014) is the gripping story of Pope Pius XI’s
secret relations with Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. This groundbreaking
work, based on seven years of research in the Vatican
and Fascist archives, including reports from Mussolini’s spies inside the
highest levels of the Church, will forever change our understanding of the Vatican’s role in the rise of Fascism in Europe.

David I. Kertzer is the author of numerous books
and the Paul Dupee University Professor of Social Science at Brown University,
where he is also professor of anthropology and Italian studies. His earlier
publication “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara” (Knopf/Vintage) was a finalist
for the National Book Award in 1997, and he has twice received the Marraro
Prize from the Society for Italian Historical Studies for the best work on
Italian history (1985, 1990). His 2001 book, “The Popes Against The Jews”
(Knopf/Vintage), a look at the Vatican's
role in the rise of modern anti-Semitism, has been published in Italian,
French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Brazilian, Polish, Hungarian, and British
editions.
