Solving the puzzle of Beethoven’s Obsession
You don't have to love Beethoven to get into this story of one of classical music’s great mysteries – That at the height of his powers, Beethoven was obsessed with writing not one, but 33 brilliant variations on an insignificant beer hall waltz. Neglecting his masterpieces, The Ninth Symphony and The Mass, Beethoven spent years racing against time and deafness to complete them.
Two centuries later one obsession leads to another. Katherine Brandt, brilliant musicologist, in her own race against time, is obsessed with “Why?” And even though they are separated by 200 years, these two people share an obsession that might, even for a moment, make time stand still. Janice Fay Hanges, Peter Kelly, Elizabeth Mialaret, Steve Schnapper, Larry Schneider, Meredith Tanowitz, Diao Ueden. Pianist Donna Cialfi highlights the play with many of Diabelli's variations.
