The Junior League New Member Coffee

The Junior League of Central Westchester (JLCW) is hosting their semi-annual “New Member Coffee” at Wayside Cottage on Sept. 22, at 9:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The following is a press release from The Junior League of Central Westchester:

Prospective members will learn of the JLCW’s efforts to improve the lives of women and children throughout their community.  Through literacy events, book drives, delivering food to soup kitchens, community clean-up, and other hands-on events, members develop deep roots and bonds within the League while effecting real change in their community.

New members enter a training course where they complete a short-term project over the course of a few weeks.  Recent projects have included Reading Fun Day benefitting Eastchester Community Action Program (ECAP) and Healthy Kids Day for Head Start Preschool children in White Plains.  New members learn to use the support network built into the JLCW and acquire new skills in fundraising, allocation, team-building, and event planning.

Many residents and their children have participated in JLCW events such as Safety Town, a week-long safety course for children about to enter Kindergarten; costumed tours of Wayside Cottage attended by many second and fourth-grade classes; and author visits by JLCW member Laura Marsh, author of Steps to Liberty, a children’s picture book of historical fiction.

JLCW members have been effecting positive change in the area for over 60 years.  As JLCW President Lynn Marvin of Scarsdale puts it, “Our communities need our help now more than ever before, and the League is proud to be able to make a difference in the lives of the individuals we serve.   While helping others is our primary goal, our members find that they also benefit from opportunities to develop and grow personally – like building leadership skills, using a new newsletter software program, or learning how to plan a project. Plus, you get to meet women from all over the area while you meet the needs of your community.”

The coffees will be a chance to meet current JLCW members, get to know other prospective members and to enjoy a visit to Wayside Cottage, a historic landmark that has recently completed a “period” renovation.

The Junior League of Central Westchester (JLCW) is a nonprofit women’s organization committed to promoting volunteerism; developing the potential of women; and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

The JLCW invites women of all races, religions and national origins who are committed to volunteerism to become a member.

The coffees will be held at 9:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Wayside Historical Cottage, 1039 Post Road, Scarsdale NY.  RSVP by Sept. 15 to jlcw@verizon.net or by phone to 914-723-6130.
