Scarsdale to Expand Leaf Mulching Program

Mayor says program can save taxpayers money, boost soil quality.

Scarsdale will expand its leaf mulching program to include all village parks that have grassy areas, lawmakers announced at Wednesday's night board meeting.

The village sampled the project at Chase Park and DeLima Park last year, and will now expand the scope to a total of 27 parks, according to Scarsdale mayor Miriam Levitt Flisser.

"We hope that residents will be inspired by our example and utilize leaf mulching techniques, saving tax money expended for leave pick-up while improving the soil quality in Scarsdale," she added.

The process entails leaving leaves on the ground—rather than raking and bagging them— and allowing their nutrients to mingle with the soil.
