A Spooky, Fun Halloween at Scarsdale’s Greenacres Elementary School

The entire school participated in the annual Halloween assembly Thursday, which featured performances by costumed fifth graders.

The students of Greenacres Elementary School in Scarsdale scared up some fun Thursday at the school’s annual Halloween assembly, where fifth graders dressed in costumes and entertained their younger schoolmates.

About 60 fifth graders danced to spooky classics by Bach and Camille Saint-Saens, and sang “Greenacres Ghosts” and other songs with customized lyrics for the Halloween event. Among the elaborate costumes were “crayons,” a Cat in the Hat, a living gumball machine and iPhone, some hockey, soccer and football players, cats, bumble bees and nerds.

A couple of dozen parents sat up in the balcony of the school’s gym and snapped pictures of their adorably costumed children, who hid behind curtains and screens and jumped out to “scare” the younger students.

“It’s one of the events these students look forward to as they make their way through the grades,” said music teacher Maggie Hoffee, who organized the festivities. “They know that when they get to fifth grade, they’ll be the one putting on the show.”
