Scarsdale's Steven Shelov Named Associate Dean

Scarsdale resident Steven P. Shelov, MD, MS, has been appointed Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education at Winthrop-University Hospital. Dr. Shelov is charged with overseeing the 80, third and fourth-year medical students who come to Winthrop’s Clinical Campus of Stony Brook University’s School of Medicine for the majority of their clinical experience and classroom training.

A graduate of Yale University, Dr. Shelov completed his medical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a Master’s of Administrative Medicine degree at the University of Wisconsin.

A prominent advocate for child health policy and education, Dr. Shelov served as Vice Chairman and Professor of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine until his recruitment in 1997 to become Chairman of Pediatrics and Vice President of Maimonides Infants and Children’s Hospital of Brooklyn, as well as Chair and Vice President of Lutheran Medical Center. Over the course of his tenure as Chair, he developed the three-hospital system of Maimonides, Lutheran and Coney Island Hospital. 

In 2010, Dr. Shelov assumed a new role as Associate Chief of Staff at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center. The following year, he took on the role of Interim Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics for the North Shore-LIJ Health System and for the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, where he is currently a professor.

Over the years, he has been asked to serve as an expert on a number of television and radio shows nationwide, including on the WNBC show “The Today Show.” The author of over 100 articles and 15 books, Dr. Shelov is the Editor-in-Chief of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Caring for Your Baby and Young Child - Birth to Five. He is also co-editor of the textbook Pediatrics for Medical Students.

Dr. Shelov is currently a member of the Council on Education for the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). Dr. Shelov has also been active in health policy, serving several presidential administrations and is currently working with New York State government leadership to address important child healthcare quality issues.

Winthrop-University Hospital was recently designated a Clinical Campus of Stony Brook University’s School of Medicine, an exciting extension of the Hospital’s long tradition of undergraduate medical education and ACGME-Accredited Graduate Medical Education Programs.
