Westchester County's NewRo Runners Sending 34 Runners to Sunday's ING New York City Marathon

The NewRo Runners club of Westchester County is again sending more than 30 runners to participate in Sunday's annual ING New York City Marathon.

From NewRo Runners:

NewRo Runners will be represented by 34 runners from Westchester in this Sunday’s ING NYC Marathon.

“Westchester has a vibrant and active community of runners with some of the best and most scenic running routes and trails in NY. It's the perfect location to train for a marathon,” said Steven Stein, President of NewRo Runners. “Participation by NewRo Runners in the NYC Marathon has grown rapidly over the past few years, as it is so much easier to train with a group that can motivate and who share similar goals.”

Last year NewRo Runners had 35 members ready to run the marathon before it was cancelled by Hurricane Sandy. On marathon Sunday in 2012, NewRo Runners hastily organized a benefit run for those impacted by Sandy and raised $3,000 for the Red Cross relief efforts. “We had over 70 members show up at the last minute and donate cash and clothing,” said David Brot, Vice President of NewRo Runners. “We also had 4 runners who ran a full marathon along Pinebrook Boulevard in New Rochelle that Sunday. They were trained and ready.”

Members of NewRo Runners have sponsored Hernán Barreneche Ríos (74) who is a long-distance runner from Colombia. Hernán twice represented his native country at the Summer Olympics (1968 and 1972). He won the bronze medal in the men's marathon at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia. He has continued to compete at the World Masters Athletics and for the past 3 Games he has won gold in the marathon. Hernán won his age division (70-74) in this year’s Boston Marathon, finishing ahead of the bomb blasts in an incredible time of 3:19:09. “We are fortunate to be able to bring such a talented runner and inspirational individual to compete in New York,” said Mark Medin, a NewRo Runners Board member who organized the sponsorship.

“This year’s ING NYC Marathon is particularly meaningful and emotional for all runners,” said Stein, “it's the first major Marathon on the northeast following the tragic events earlier this year in Boston, and all runners will be paying tribute to those who lost their lives and whose world will never be quite the same. We are all looking forward to running and celebrating what we all love to do come Sunday morning.”

NewRo Runners participating this Sunday are: Jim Aiello; Brad Angevine; Hernan Barraneche Rios; Dan Burton; Lourdes Caballes; Sarah Cave; Russell Cruz; Tom Dente; Gavin Duke; Nicole Granston; Marc Gross; Steve Herzberg; Leslie Hoot; Kenny Hoong; Marty Keltz; Jason Krasner; Melissa Labozetta; Mark Medin; Hector Mendoza; Karen Murray; Jim Nunan; AnnMaria Rankis; Sean Rivera; Don Safferstein; James Soohoo; Kathy SooHoo; Steven Stein; Nina Steinberg; Tracie Sundack; Eric Turkewitz; Angela Vega; David Watson; and Renee Wolk.
