Norwalk, CT, October 2, 2013 – Embarking on its 21st year of providing local high school students with leadership training through local and global community service projects, Builders Beyond Borders (B3) kicked off its current program year with an all-participant meeting at Weston High School early last month. A few weeks later, students worked on team-building and communication skills during their individual team retreats, which were held at the B3 office in Norwalk.

The non-profit organization represents more than 25 local high schools across Fairfield County. Enrolled students have the opportunity to engage in fundraising and community service projects throughout Fairfield County during the school year, culminating in travel to a Latin American or

Caribbean country each spring to build needed facilities for deserving communities.  In the spring of 2014, B3 students will travel to the Dominican Republic. This past spring, B3 students traveled to Guyana, where they built community centers and bridges throughout five communities.  Past programs focused on building projects in Nicaragua, Ecuador and Peru, among other Latin American and Caribbean countries.

According to Steve Lewine, President of the B3 Board of Directors, “Each year at Builders Beyond Borders is better than the last! B3 strives to provide more and more local community service opportunities to students in addition to the year-end service trips abroad. These projects are a great opportunity for high school students to give back to their local community, teach them leadership skills, and begin to think about what it means to be a global citizen.”

Upcoming local service projects include river and lake cleanups in Bridgeport and Norwalk and garden builds in schools throughout Bridgeport and Norwalk. Builders Beyond Borders will also host a community build at Wakeman Town Farm on Sunday, October 27, 2013 from 9am-3pm. All community members (B3-related or otherwise) are invited to participate.
