planning board rejects midway expansion

PLANNING BOARD REJECTS MIDWAY SHOPPING CENTER EXPANSION IN EDGEMONT--

The Greenburgh Planning Board voted this past week against a proposal that would have resulted in the expansion of the Midway Shopping Center which is located off of Central Ave and Ardsley Road in the Edgemont section of town.   The applicant requested permission to construct  a new two-story 10,800 sq. ft. retail/restaurant (5,400 sq. ft. dedicated to a retail 1st level/5,400 sq. ft. dedicated to a restaurant 2nd level) building and a new one-story 3,500 sq. ft. restaurant building adjacent to an existing Smashburger Restaurant at the shopping center (which currently houses --among other stores - Shoprite).  This shopping center is one of the most successful shopping centers in the region--there is always a lot of traffic and shoppers.   A number of residents who live near the shopping center claimed that there was  insufficient parking and expressed concerns  about traffic flow and traffic safety.  Because the shopping center is so busy there have been accidents in the parking areas.  Some people suggested a parking garage be required.  Other people indicated that they would support an expansion at the south of the complex - not the north.  There is much less traffic at the southern end of the Midway Shopping Center   The applicant had  proposed landscaping improvements, modifications to the existing parking layout, and ingress/egress improvements along Ardsley Road and Central Park Avenue South that they felt would have improved traffic flow.   Although members of the Town Board do not have to follow the recommendations of the Planning Board on this application, I will recommend to the Town Board that we support the Planning Board's decision.   YOGA AT THE GREENBURGH NATURE CENTER ON MONDAY EVENINGS AT 7 PM ENJOY the 2nd season of YOGA at Greenburgh Nature Center every Monday at 7pm and Friday at 9am.
