Westchester's Best Supermarket — You Decide

There are more choices than ever for your weekly stock up.

Grocery shopping can be a chore — an expensive one at that — but it can also be fun, extreme, even political.

Local or national? Bargain or upscale? Big warehouse or small chain? Bring the kids or have it delivered? Who has the best deals or hard-to-find products? Why do I find coupons anxiety-inducing?

(The biggest question of all is reserved for Danny Wegman himself. Why can't you build a supermarket around here?)

Westchester has never had so many choices. And now that's going to increase by one more with the news today a Whole Foods will open in Port Chester in 2013.

So we thought we'd ask the smartest folks in the room — you.

What's your favorite local supermarket? Do you always go to the same one or bounce around based on sales or shopping needs?

Shop-Rite in Cortlandt Manor. Friendly and helpful staff...lots of cashiers so no long lines!

Trader Joe's handsdown. TJ's has healthy, high quality fresh, as well as convenient, food at affordable prices. Lines are never long because all cashiers are open. We go to Danbury or Hartsdale at least once a month.

I recommend spending as little time as possible in supermarkets. Opt for farmers market and food co-ops.

The new ShopRite is Scarsdale. It's the best of both worlds where I can easily find ethnic seasonings, organic chicken, variety of produce, and vegetarian frozen food. My dollar also is stretched quite a bit there. Although I do spend money (no grocers is inexpensive today), at least I don't leave that store scratching my head questioning where my money was spent like I do when I shop at Stew Leonards (although Stew's does have excellent selection of beef and a great wine shop).

I was just at the Scarsdale ShopRite last night. It IS a good store.
