Bandit Pair Buys $11K Jewelry with Bad Credit Card

The following article was written by Patch Editor Krista Madsen and reposted by Patch Editor Chris McHugh:

The owner of Star Jewelry on Main Street in Tarrytown told police on August 9 at 5:03 p.m. that she was just the victim of a large larceny done with a fraudulent credit card.

A man and woman were allegedly able to purchase $11,000 worth of jewelry from the store, police said.

The credit card they were trying to use did not initially go through. Lt. William Herguth said the "thief then called his 'bank' and gave the proprietor a number to put in the machine and the sale went through.'
The number he gave, Herguth said, was apparently for training bank employees and never debited the account. The card had been stolen.

Police searched area at the time and interviewed the owner for a statement. The culprits have been described as:

  • A black man with medium/dark skin, medium length hair, brown eyes, 5’ 8", soft-spoken, and
  • a black woman with medium skin, short hair, brown eyes, 5'8", soft-spoken.
The grand larceny case is still under investigation they said with no suspects.
