A 32-year-old Port Chester man faces a felony charge after discharging a round from his roommate's semi-automatic handgun before dawn Friday, police said.

Robert Monteiro, of The Mariner apartments at 21 Willett Ave., was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment.

At about 12:10 a.m. Friday, police received a report from Monteiro's roommate, 30, that he had heard a shot fired within their unit and upon entering that room found Monteiro there holding his (the roommate's) legally registered pistol, police said.

"It's possible that he [Monteiro] was distressed over the death of a family member and attempted suicide," said Lt. James Ladeairous of the Port Chester Police Department.

Monteiro was transported to White Plains Hospital for evaluation and subsequently booked at Port Chester Police Department, Ladeairous said.

He was arraigned Friday and released, with a court date scheduled for Dec. 19, police said.
