Man Sentenced to 23 Years for Yonkers Slaying

Andrew Barnett pleaded guilty to fatally shooting John Nunez-Lopez in Yonkers on May 9, 2011.

A Yonkers man was sentenced to 23 years in prison today after he pleaded guilty to last year’s fatal shooting at the Nodine Hill section of Yonkers.

Andrew Barnett, 21, of Yonkers, was sentenced after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.

On May 9, 2011,  Barnett shot John Nunez-Lopez multiple times in the vicinity of 160 Willow Street.

Nunez-Lopez spoke briefly to Yonkers city police after they arrived at the scene, before losing consciousness. He was transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx where he was pronounced dead.

During the course of their investigation, police spoke with an eyewitness who recognized Barnett as someone who frequented the neighborhood in recent months. Barnett and Nunez-Lopez had gotten into an argument that escalated with Barnett leaving, returning with a gun and shooting Nunez-Lopez several times.

Police were able to locate Barnett at his apartment on 164 Willow Street and arrested him.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Nadine Nagler of the Career Criminal Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Virginia Marciano of the Special Litigation Bureau.

23 years for a murder and illegal handgun. Nice, so you can act like an animal and take someones life and the justice system still allows you to see another day and take another life. This guys rap sheet is probably a novel and im sure jail will rehabilitate him greatly. I applaud liberal NY. He's a poor "victim of society" and should be given another chance... it only takes a guy like this to take one of your own family members lives and your liberal attitude will change greatly!!

People like this guy should rot and take notice of the crime he commited! Just like he laughed at the system, one day someone will do the same to him and that person will laugh too. This guy was a coward to bring a gun to a fist fight!! But he will pay... 20 years fly by, and the streets will be waiting! The man in which life was taken from will forever be in his mind; day and night. Cowards like this garbage will forever be haunted by his actions!! See you in the streets COWARD!!

LOOK NO FURTHER AS TO WHY THERE ARE SUCH HIGH RATES OF GUN VIOLENCE! This man shot and killed someone and is going to be out of jail in 20 years. But yea, the guns are the problem,an releasing convicted murderers has NOTHING to do with it...disgraceful....

guns are the problem but apparently releasing convicted murderers isn't
