No Trick Or Treating In Scarsdale Tonight Due To Safety Concerns

The State of Emergency is still in effect for Scarsdale tonight.

The following is an update from Police Lt. Thomas Altizio at the Scarsdale Emergency Operations Center:

A State of Emergency remains in effect in Scarsdale through Wednesday, October 31. There are still dozens of downed trees down with wires involved that can pose an extremely hazardous situation. The Village of Scarsdale is asking that parents and youths recognize these potential dangers, exercise common sense and suspend any Halloween plans for trick or treating.

As of this time, there are over 4200 Scarsdale residences without power. There are numerous traffic signals and street lighs out of service with no power. As of today, Con Edison is estimating 7 to 10 days for restoration, and is still assessing the damage. Restoration times could potentially be even longer.

Village of Scarsdale facilities have also been impacted by the loss of power and communications, and are operating from backup power and telephone systems. The Police, Fire and Public Works Departments all have additional personnel deployed to deal with the current situation, and are waiting for Con Edison restoration crews to progress.

People's safety continues to be our primary concern, and we again urge people to stay away from down trees and wires and stay off the streets at night, when the power outage makes it extremely difficult to see downed trees and wires.

If this is happening in a community like Scarsdale, then as a taxpayer I am irritated. Where are allRead More the taxes going if teachers are paying for their own classroom supplies? There has to be some degree of accountability regarding our tax dollars. We are the highest-taxed county in the nation and we can't afford notebooks and post-it notes? As a community member, I am not going to "lend a hand." I already do that with my tax dollars.
