Police: Kayaker Rescued Dog in Tarrytown [Updated]

Emergency crews responded to the Tarrytown Lakes Sunday for a call of a man in distress on the ice.

Monday update:

Update, Monday: The man was in his kayak on frozen Tarrytown Upper Lake in an attempt to rescue his dog, report police this morning.

Sunday's report that a man was trapped in his kayak on the frozen lake left many wondering why he would be there in the first place. Today, Tarrytown Police Lieutenant William Herguth clarified that the man was trying to rescue his pet.

The man was walking his dog on the lake trail when the dog ran off and went out on the lake and fell through the ice, Herguth said. The man then reportedly went home and got his kayak and put that out to try to rescue his dog. He was able to get his dog into the kayak but was having trouble getting the boat back to shore.

Herguth said the fire department was there to assist him but he was able to get back on his own, where he was evaluated by the Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. The man refused any further medical assistance.

He brought his dog to the Sleepy Hollow Animal Hospital for evalaution.
